How to read an IGI certificate before you buy?

Most people glance at an IGI certificate, see a few letters and numbers, and hand it right back. That is a mistake. Every section on that report actually tells you something about what you are paying for, and reading it properly takes less time than picking the ring itself.

This guide breaks down an IGI certificate diamond report section by section, so the next time one lands in your hands, you actually know what you are looking at.

What an IGI certificate actually tells you

An IGI report is an independent evaluation, done by a gemologist with no stake in the sale. It exists specifically so a buyer does not have to take a seller's word for what a stone is.

Diamond certification India wide runs mainly through two labs, IGI and GIA, with IGI handling the large majority of lab grown diamond reports in the country. The report covers the diamond's identity, its measurements, and a full breakdown of the 4Cs.

Report number and basic details

Every report opens with a unique report number. This number matters more than any other field on the page, since it is what lets anyone verify the stone matches its paperwork.

Alongside it sits the shape, measurements in millimetres, and whether the diamond is natural or lab grown, along with its growth method, CVD or HPHT.

The 4Cs: colour, clarity, cut and carat

This is the section most buyers already know to check, though not always correctly.

Carat weight is listed to the hundredth decimal. Colour runs on a scale from D, completely colourless, down through the alphabet, with visible warmth appearing past J or K for most buyers. Clarity runs from FL, flawless, down to I3, with inclusions visible to the naked eye. Cut, for round diamonds specifically, gets its own grade based on how well the proportions work together to produce brilliance.

A high clarity grade paired with a poor cut will still look duller than a slightly lower clarity stone cut well.

Proportions diagram

The proportions diagram sits in the middle of most reports, showing a side profile of the diamond with its key angles marked out. Table percentage, depth percentage and pavilion angle all live here.

These numbers predict how light travels through the stone, which is the real driver of sparkle. Two diamonds with identical carat and clarity can look noticeably different once their proportions are compared side by side.

Clarity plot and laser inscription

The clarity characteristics plot maps out exactly where a diamond's inclusions sit, almost like a fingerprint unique to that specific stone. This is the section that lets a jeweller confirm your stone actually matches its certificate.

Every IGI report also comes with a laser inscription, the report number engraved directly onto the diamond's girdle. A jeweller can check this under 10x magnification in minutes, and it should always match the number printed on the paper.

IGI versus GIA

The GIA comparison comes up often, and the short version is this. GIA still dominates certification for mined diamonds, but for lab grown stones, GIA now issues a simplified Premium or Standard tier rather than a detailed grade by grade report. IGI, by contrast, grades lab grown diamonds on the full 4Cs framework, with individual colour and clarity grades and a complete proportions diagram.

For a buyer who wants the full picture rather than a simplified summary, IGI reports currently offer more detail specifically for lab grown stones.

How to verify a diamond certificate online

Checking how to verify a diamond certificate takes under a minute. Find the report number on the certificate, visit igi.org, and enter it on the report verification page. The results should match every field on your physical copy, carat, colour, clarity and cut included.

Jewelbox provides a full IGI report with every piece sold, and encourages customers to verify it independently rather than take the certificate at face value. That is exactly how buying a diamond should work.

FAQs

1. What is the most important field on an IGI certificate?
The report number. It is the one detail that lets you verify the stone matches its paperwork, both online and through the laser inscription.

2. How do I verify my diamond's certificate online?
Enter the report number on igi.org's verification page and compare the result against your physical certificate.

3. What is a laser inscription and why does it matter?
It is the report number engraved on the diamond's girdle, letting a jeweller confirm the stone matches its certificate under magnification.

4. Does Jewelbox provide IGI certificates with every diamond?
Yes. Every lab grown diamond at Jewelbox comes with a full IGI report, verifiable through the lab's official website.
